Lane’s basketball journey began as a standout eighth-grader at Crispus Attucks Middle School, where his elite shooting and court vision earned him recognition as one of Indianapolis’s top young prospects. He joined Arsenal Tech’s freshman team, quickly establishing himself as a sharpshooter. However, by his sophomore year, a new coaching staff limited his opportunities, relegating him to junior varsity and stalling his progress.
“I felt like I was working hard, but it wasn’t enough,” Lane said in a recent interview. “At one point, I questioned if basketball was even for me.”
His junior year brought even more adversity. After being cut from the varsity team, Lane shifted his focus to academics and being a regular student—until fate intervened. In late November 2008, a theft scandal sidelined nine varsity players, leaving the team desperate for reinforcements. Lane received an unexpected call from the coach to suit up for a varsity game against #2-ranked Lawrence North.
“It was surreal,” Lane recalled. “One day, I’m sitting in class like any other student, and the next, I’m playing against one of the best teams in the state. I wasn’t even sure if I’d get minutes, let alone make an impact.”
What followed was nothing short of legendary. Lane erupted for 42 points, including a record-breaking 13 three-pointers, in a double-overtime loss that left the gym buzzing. His performance not only saved Arsenal Tech’s season but also reignited his basketball career.
Senior Year and the Rise of a Sharpshooter
Riding the momentum from his breakout game, Lane approached his senior year with renewed confidence. As the team’s starting guard, he averaged 16.5 points, 4 assists, and shot a blistering 52% from beyond the arc. His ability to light up the scoreboard made him one of the most exciting players in the state.
Yet, despite his impressive stats, Lane struggled to attract Division I interest. At just 5’11”, many coaches overlooked him. That is, until Benjy Taylor, the head coach at Chicago State University, remembered the young guard who torched the nets during that fateful game against Lawrence North.
“I’ll never forget watching him hit those threes,” Taylor said. “His form, his composure—it was clear this kid had something special. We didn’t have a scholarship to offer, but I knew we had to find a way to bring him here.”
Becoming a Fan Favorite at Chicago State
Lane joined Chicago State as a preferred walk-on, a role that requires tremendous work ethic and little promise of playing time. But for Lane, it was a dream come true.
“I didn’t care about being a walk-on,” Lane said. “I just wanted the chance to prove I belonged at the Division I level. For me, it wasn’t about how I got there—it was about what I did with the opportunity.”
Lane’s tenacity quickly won over the coaching staff and his teammates. In his first major appearance, he came off the bench against #15 Marquette, scoring 8 points, including two three-pointers, in a spirited performance. The fans took notice, and Lane became a crowd favorite for his relentless energy and clutch shooting.
“Every time I step on the court, I feel like I’m representing everyone who’s ever been told they weren’t good enough,” Lane said. “I’ve learned to embrace my role, whether it’s sparking the team with a couple of big shots or diving for loose balls. Whatever it takes to help us win.”

As Lane continues his career at Chicago State, he remains focused on the bigger picture. “Basketball has given me so much, and I just want to keep proving to myself and others that I belong here.”
